Delve Deeper: Messianic Hope and Longing in Jewish Thought

Messianism is a cornerstone of Jewish thought. By focusing on the divergence with Christianity, the disappointed expectation of the 17th-century messiah Sabbatai Zvi, the rise of Hasidism, interpretations of Jewish Statehood as supernal redemption, and the influence of Chabad philosophy on contemporary American Jewry, we will explore how Jews have made sense of exile and suffering, hope and longing.
About the instructor: Paul E. Nahme is Associate Professor of Judaic Studies and Religious Studies at Brown University, where he is the incoming director of the Program in Judaic Studies. He taught “Modern Judaism” for Delve Deeper in Fall 2017.

Wednesdays, 7:00–9:00pm
February 5, 12, 19, 26
March 5, 12, 19, 26

All classes will be held on Zoom.

Cost: $250
Please do not let cost be a barrier! To learn about scholarships, contact Morty Miller or a rabbi at a sponsoring synagogue.

Pottery with Kaelyn

This class is for beginner to intermediate pottery students. We will focus on a mix of throwing and hand building techniques with stoneware clay. Five weeks will be spent on greenware and three weeks on glazing, with touch points on each step of the making process.

About the instructor: Kaelyn began making pottery in 2015 and it immediately took over her life. She taught at studios in Seattle until she opened a community studio just in time for Covid to shut it down. She focuses mainly on throwing, but also incorporates hand building techniques. She considers pottery a “jobby,” though it’s a nearly full-time gig and she’s excited to get back to teaching.
